Chair UX – Summer School
Overview
The NSERC-Prompt Industrial Research Chair in User Experience is proud to offer an intensive 16-week internship at HEC Montréal’s Tech3Lab, in association with one of the UX Chair’s partners, to work on a research project in the field of user experience, neuroscience and decision science.
We strongly encourage students who have applied to the M.Sc. – user experience, or have already been admitted to M.Sc. in UX, to consider applying to this UX Chair summer internship to significantly accelerate their academic progress. Program Eligibility
Only current undergraduate student or recently graduated students are eligible for this summer internship. International students or non-residents of Montreal are welcome to apply on this internship and will be able to enjoy the benefits offered by HEC Montréal.
Please note:
- Maintain a GPA of at least of 3.0 out of 4.3
- This internship is not exclusive to HEC students.
Summer School Program Features
- Learn how to run an academic research project in a UX laboratory.
- Supervision and mentorship by an HEC Montreal faculty member, and by the researchers from the largest UX Lab in North America.
- Training for academic writing and participation to writing workshop.
- Opportunity to co-author a scientific paper or a conference act.
- Advanced training in technological and neurophysiological equipment through access to a state-of-the-art research laboratory.
- Discussions on the opportunities for the M.Sc. program and acquisition of additional laboratory skills.
Summer School Expectations
Students are expected tobe present full-time in the Tech3Lab laboratory, to participate in weekly lab meetings, and attend weekly academic and research seminars. The weekly seminars cover such topics as giving an oral presentation, writing a research abstract. This summer school allows to learn about various options available to pursue to the M.Sc. and the Ph.D. programs within Chair UX’s research projects.

These seminars are designed to help students improve their presentation skills and to be more competitive graduate applicants. Students will also have the opportunity to attend research seminars, and meet with various HEC Montreal faculty members and project managers from our industrial partners.
At the end of this summer school, students are required to give a poster presentation on their research, submit a 5-page research summary, and a one-page personal statement about their summer experience at HEC Montreal.
Call for submissions
The summer school is intended for current undergraduate students or recently graduated.
All submitted proposals are subject to acceptance by the committee members.
Proposals should be mailed to: chaire.ux@hec.ca as soon as possible.
You have until March 31st to submit your application.

This internship also offers the opportunity to benefit from funding through Undergraduate Research Awards (USRA) offered by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) as well as by IVADO, the institue for data valorization. THE BEST APPLICATIONS SELECTED BY THE LABORATORY COMMITTEE WILL BE SUBMITTED FOR EVALUATION ON THE NSERC, IVADO and Chair UX SCHOLARSHIPS. Note THAT OBTAINING ONE OF THESE ScolarshipS INCREASES CONSIDERABLY THE CHANCES OF OBTAINING A Scolarship FOR the M.Sc. AND Ph.D.
1- Undergraduate Student Research Awards
These scholarships, valued between $ 4,500 and $ 7,000 each, are graciously offered by NSERC and the FRQNT as part of this 16-week summer internship at Tech3Lab at HEC Montréal. Only applications accepted by March 22nd 2019 will be eligible for the CRSNG BRPC Scholarships.
USRA are meant to nurture your interest and fully develop your potential for a research career in the natural sciences and engineering. They are also meant to encourage you to undertake graduate studies in these fields. If you would like to gain research work experience that complements your studies in an academic setting, these awards can provide you with financial support through your host university. NSERC encourages qualified Aboriginal students to apply for this award.
To be eligible to apply for an award, you must:
- be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada as of the deadline date for applications at the university;
- be registered, at the time you apply, in a bachelor’s degree program at an eligible university;
- have obtained, over the previous years of study, a cumulative average of at least second class (a grade of « B » or « B-, » if applicable) as defined by your university.
In addition…
- If you already hold a bachelor’s degree and are studying toward a second bachelor’s degree, you may still apply for this award.
- You may hold only one university USRA per fiscal year (April 1 to March 31).
- You may hold a maximum of three university USRAs throughout your undergraduate university career.
To hold an award, the student must:
- have completed all the course requirements of at least the first year of university study (or two academic terms) of your bachelor’s degree;
- have been registered in at least one of the two terms immediately before holding the award in a bachelor’s degree program at an eligible university;
- not have started a program of graduate studies in the natural sciences or engineering at any time;
- be engaged on a full-time basis in research and development activities in the natural sciences or engineering during the tenure of the award.
2 – CHAIR UX SUMMER SCHOOL UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH AWARDS
Several scholarships are offered by the UX Chair as part of this 16-week summer internship at Tech3Lab at HEC Montréal. Candidates already admitted to the M.Sc. in user experience will be privileged to obtain this scholarship. However, all applications will be evaluated by the laboratory committee.
WHAT ARE THESE AWARDS FOR?
These scholarships are for undergraduate students and have the following objectives:
- introduce students to a university research project in a UX laboratory;
- encourage to pursue to the M.Sc. and Ph.D;
- to become familiar with the field of user experience, neuroscience and decision science
